l'objectif de l'activité / the goal of the activity : They had to code a program in which they ask it to create answers. Generate random words of random length, and display it like ChatGPT. simulate, random generation, random length, random sentences to learn about loops, if, statements....

  • Toy Car (Calcul différentiel)

nom de cours/ name of the course :    Calcul différentiel

ton nom / your name : Véronique

nom de l'activité/ name of the activity : Find the speed of the toy car depuis combien de

temps cette activite existe-t-elle/  how long has this activity been in use: 4 years

la durée de l'activité / duration of the activity: 30 min to an hour depending on groups

description de l'activité / description of the activity: I draw a big arrow on the board, then I push a toy car on the little shelf at the bottom of the board. The car passes in front of the arrow and stops somewhere close to the end of the board. There are measuring tapes at the front of the class. I tell them that in X minutes I will push the car again, and I will them ask them to tell me the speed of the car as it passes in front of the arrow. They decide what measurements to make. Then I push the car, they measure their thing, we share answers. They have usually measured the average speed of the car. We discuss how it's not what we want. So they try again. We do the "experiment" a few times and discuss. Eventually they "discover" the definition of the derivative.

l'objectif de l'activité / the goal of the activity: Learning the definition of the derivative, learning the meaning of the derivative, learning about the difference between average speed and instant speed.

  • Battleship (Calcul différentiel)

nom de cours/ name of the course : Calcul différentiel

ton nom / your name : Joelle Matte

nom de l'activité/ name of the activity: Battle my math

depuis combien de temps cette activite existe-t-elle/  how long has this activity been in use: 2 years

la durée de l'activité / duration of the activity: 40 minutes

description de l'activité / description of the activity : Activité de Battleship. Pour pouvoir faire une attaque, il faut répondre à une question de dérivation. Si tu n'as pas la bonne réponse, tu ne peux pas savoir si tu as touché un bateau.

l'objectif de l'activité / the goal of the activity : Pratiquer la dérivation.

  • QR code Rally (Calcul intégral)

nom de cours/ name of the course : Calcul intégral

ton nom / your name : Marc-Olivier Ouellet

nom de l'activité/ name of the activity : QR code rally

depuis combien de temps cette activite existe-t-elle/  how long has this activity been in use: One semester (i created it in winter 2024)

la durée de l'activité / duration of the activity : 2 hours

description de l'activité / description of the activity: I created 10 math problems that are slightly more difficult than exam problems. I generated one QR code for each problem. I printed one page per QR code and each page included the following elements: a letter, a QR code, and an answer to a problem that is NOT the one associated to the QR code on that page. The pages are placed around the classroom and the students are instructed to pick a starting point. They would then take note of the letter for the page that is their starting point, scan the QR code to reveal the problem and solve it. Once they have the answer to their starting problem, they would search around the classroom for their answer on a different page. Once they find it, they take note of the letter on the new page, and they do it all over again, until they come back to their starting point. The letters they collected can now be rearranged to spell a word.

l'objectif de l'activité / the goal of the activity: Review the material, practice problem-solving skills, prepare for exams.

  • C and C (Linear Algebra)

nom de cours/ name of the course: Linear Algebra

ton nom / your name: Brody Causley

nom de l'activité/ name of the activity: Collaborate and Compete

depuis combien de temps cette activite existe-t-elle/  how long has this activity been in use: One time

la durée de l'activité / duration of the activity: Partial Lesson

description de l'activité / description of the activity: Divide students into teams (I used a bag of colored cubes for them to choose randomly), have them self-prepare new material as a group for competition, then each team was given a math test to solve collaboratively. First team to solve the math test (correctly) wins.

l'objectif de l'activité / the goal of the activity: Group learning provides a supportive environment, where students can both explain concepts in simpler terms, and think critically by discussing multiple approaches to problems. Team competition teaches pressure in a low-pressure environment, and develops students' resilience by learning from teammate's mistakes.

  • Vector Art (Linear Algbera)

nom de cours/ name of the course: Linear Algebra

ton nom / your name: Lee Zentner

nom de l'activité/ name of the activity : Vector Art

la durée de l'activité / duration of the activity: At home project

description de l'activité / description of the activity: Students are given 16 items that are in the world of vector geometry and must be incorporated into one piece of artwork. Examples include: Paintings, board games, video games, raps, poems, music, stories, comics.....

l'objectif de l'activité / the goal of the activity: Force them to think about math in a new way that places importance on recognizing mathematical objects in the real world.
